I've spent years out in the Mentawais at this point so I know what details matter, and I've put you in the best possible hands for the best experience possible.

Eleven nights on a 23-metre charter. Eleven women. Daily coaching, daily video, a professional photo and video package airdropped to you each evening, and demo boards on the boat that are up for grabs for you to try (and buy).

This is your trip if:

You're a Stage 4–5 surfer looking to challenge yourself.
You want to push your confidence to the next level and you're not afraid to surf with a crowd sometimes.
You're ready to see your true potential. This is one of the highest level trips I offer.
You're confidently a Stage 4–5 surfer, able to duck dive and handle your board in overhead conditions, and comfortable in a crowd.

What Stage 4–5 looks like on this trip

You're a confident, capable surfer. You read waves well and you catch most of what you go for. You can adapt to changing conditions and position yourself in most lineups. Your surfing is less about catching waves now and more about maximizing them, and you're really looking to improve your technique on turns.

We'll be looking for waves with high-quality, repetitive sections — which will give you enough speed to actually practice maneuvers. Most of the group will be working on refining their turns and linking maneuvers together without losing speed. Think: the same wave, every time, over and over again, AND all on video so you can practice non-stop.

And there might be barrels out here. If getting barreled has been sitting somewhere in the back of your mind, this is the trip to bring it up. But also, no pressure — if you don't feel comfortable with that yet, you can easily sit / take off after the barrel sections like many people do and still reap the benefits of the rest of the wave.

The Surfing

On a boat, we go to the waves instead of waiting for them.

The Mentawai Islands is a world-class surfing destination with a ton of waves to choose from. We have an amazing boat crew and surf guide that do their best to help us select the breaks that are optimal for the skill level of the group and with as little crowd as possible — but sometimes, the crowd is unavoidable (it is the Mentawais after all). But surfing with crowds, especially more advanced-level ones, is a critical part of your surf progression too, and we'll be covering all the strategies and mindset shifts you need to have good surf sessions regardless of the crowd level.

I'll be coaching you in and out of the water every day. All your waves will be filmed for video review and your sessions will be photographed too, with the content airdropped to you at the end of each day. We review clips daily as a group, where I'll give you the detailed and honest surf coaching that makes Surferelle trips what they are — and you'll have the space to ask me as many questions as you want so you can feel good about what you're working on for the next session!

There are also demo boards on the boat, so if you've been curious about trying out different dimensions, you'll have a variety of options to surf with on the trip. This has been game-changing for our Mentawai trips, as this level is really where your equipment can start to make or break your progress — so getting you on a GOOD board changes everything!

The Boat

Ocean Dreams — a 23-metre surf charter that's built for exactly this: exploring the Mentawais, the Telos and the remote breaks of North Sumatra. She takes up to 12 guests, with air-conditioned accommodation, an experienced local crew, and food and drinks all day. Ocean Dreams has been helping surfers score out here for more than a decade, across some of the most consistent surf regions on the planet.

There's a surf support vessel that comes along, which is what makes the fishing trips and island hopping possible. Fishing gear is also on board and yours to use.

Beyond the Surf

Some of the coolest activities I have ever heard of on a surf trip. Genuinely — I've run a lot of these and this list is something else!

Getting There

You fly yourself to Padang (PDG), and you're picked up and dropped back at the airport from there. I always recommend flying round-trip to Jakarta (CGK), then booking a separate round-trip flight from CGK → PDG with Garuda Indonesia (the best and most reliable airline for Indonesian flights — and they have a generous surfboard bag policy!).
