SIMEULUE

Surferelle Stage 4-5 · March 16–27, 2027 · 11 nights

The coolest places are often the hardest ones to get to.

Simeulue is one of them.

It's a small island off North Sumatra, in Aceh — far enough off the usual Indo circuit that most surfers never make it there, and different enough from anywhere else I run trips that it earns the extra travel time. This is not the version of Indonesia you've seen on everyone's feed.

Eleven nights, which is the longest trip I run. Eight women. Waves at the doorstep and more a short boat or motorbike ride away. Daily coaching, daily video, and a professional photo and video package airdropped to you each evening.

At $4,950, that lands around $450 a day — and that includes your domestic flights, a hotel night in Medan, every meal, and the full coaching and content package. For what you're getting, that's insane!!

I'm running this one with a team that has organized these trips SOOOO many times, which is exactly what you want somewhere this remote. Every bit of the getting-there is handled. All you have to do is just show up.

(One thing to know going in: Aceh is conservative, so no bikinis in the water — board shorts and a top. You get a culturally appropriate surfwear set included, and honestly, I think it'll be kind of fun to cover up for once!)

Who This Trip Is For

This is your trip if:

  • You’re a Stage 4–5 surfer who wants real coaching somewhere genuinely off the beaten path.
  • You’ve been interested in, missed out on, or already been on one of our Mentawais trips and want something different — new challenges and more surfing days.
  • You want to explore and actually immerse yourself in Indonesian culture, not just fly in for the waves.
  • You’re not scared of a longer travel day (see above re: coolest places).
  • You want to bring non-surfing family or a partner along without giving up your coaching.
  • You get seasick. This is a land-based resort with waves out front — no boat trip required to surf. If that’s what’s been ruling Indonesia out for you, this is the one.

The Surfing

Waves out front, and more a short ride away.

Mahi Mahi sits right in front of The Peak, with a handful of other breaks reachable by a quick boat or motorbike ride. Having options like that matters more at Stage 4 and 5 than most people realize — you're selective now, and it means we can move to whatever actually suits the group best depending on swell forecasts.

I'll be coaching you in and out of the water every day. All your waves will be filmed for video review and your sessions will be photographed too, with the content airdropped to you at the end of each day. We review clips daily as a group, where I'll give you the detailed and honest surf coaching that makes Surferelle trips what they are — and you'll have the space to ask me as many questions as you want so you can feel good about what you're working on for the next session!

Where You'll Stay

Mahi Mahi Surf Resort — a women-owned, eco-conscious resort built largely from upcycled and repurposed antique materials. Comfortable and genuinely stylish, with a much lighter footprint than most surf camps.

Rooms are air-conditioned twin-share, with direct views of the surf. Family villas are available if you're bringing people.

The communal spaces:

  • The joglo — a big open teakwood structure that's the heart of the place. Meals, movies, music, reading, all with the surf in view.
  • Infinity pool overlooking The Peak
  • Refurbished surf viewing tower
  • Two bar tops, outdoor beach fire pit
  • 9-hole pitch and putt, volleyball court, ping pong, pool table, badminton

Beyond the Surf

Some of the coolest activities I have ever heard of on a surf trip. Genuinely — I've run a lot of these and this list is something else!

At the resort:

  • Special Friday night dinner by the pool
  • Beach bonfire under the stars
  • River walks

Worth getting out for:

  • Clear blue lagoons — 5-minute scooter ride from the resort
  • Waterfall hike — seven levels, 30-minute drive, then a 30-minute walk in
  • Underwater cave visit (weather dependent)
  • Sinabang town and the local market — spices, sarongs, local crafts
  • The hilltop coffee shops with the panoramic view

Available at extra cost:

Boat trip to pristine nearby islands (20-min drive) 400k IDR / person
Ice bath $30
Stand-up paddleboards / foamies 150k IDR / hour
Crayfish BBQ 250k IDR / lobster

Getting There

You fly yourself to Medan (MES). We handle everything from there — you're met at the airport, put up at Anara Sky for the night, and flown across to Simeulue the next day (cost of the hotel and domestic flight from Medan to Simeulue is included in your trip cost).
